NAACP MOURNS THE PASSING OF VERNON BAKER
July 27, 2010
The NAACP mourns the passing of Vernon Baker, former United States military officer and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Mr. Baker passed on July 13 at the age of 90 at his home in St. Maries, Idaho.

A military hero, Baker was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on April 5-6, 1945, when he and his platoon killed 26 enemy soldiers and destroyed six machine gun nests, two observer posts and four dugouts near Viareggio, Italy. He was one of seven Medal of Honor recipients who became the first Black soldiers to receive the award on January 13, 1997, and the only veteran of the group still living.

No Child Left Behind Upheld By Appeals Court

The U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals Tuesday upheld a lower court's dismissal of Connecticut's lawsuit charging that the federal No Child Left Behind school reform law is an unfunded mandate.

"This is a victory for every poor and minority child in Connecticut," said NAACP Conference President Scott X. Esdaile. "Rather than expending its funds on this lawsuit, the state should have been using its resources to address its shameful achievement gap distinction." read more click here

In March, respected members of the Congressional Black Caucus reported that racial epithets were hurled at them as they passed by a Washington, DC health care protest. read more click here

TRANSPARENCY AS A TOOL TO REDUCE UNEMPLOYMENT
Executive Summary: The NAACP proposes a Presidential initiative to ensure fair and transparent processes in the recruitment and hiring for publically-funded jobs. In many communities, including white communities and communities of color, the crisis of unemployment is compounded by the lack of access to publically-funded jobs, which is not only unfair but costly, in that those who are unemployed rely on public benefits to subsidize their cost of living. Less than 30% of publically-funded jobs are posted at public employment service centers, leaving the vast majority of publically-funded jobs inaccessible to the public, even though their tax dollars make these jobs possible. read more click here

The Census Bureau counts Connecticut's prisoners as residents of the communities where they are incarcerated,
though they can't vote and remain legal residents of the places they lived before they were incarcerated. Crediting thousands of mostly urban and minority men to the wrong communities has staggering implications for our system of representative democracy, which uses the Census to apportion political power on the basis of population. read more click here
